and they look extremely bored. michael, senator john kerry is playing the president's sparring partner. the role of mitt romney, as he prepares for next week's debate. andrea mitchell asked him earlier about that memo from beth mye. rs. here is what mr. kerry had to say. >> please, please, please, give me 20 breaks, not just one. the fact is that mitt romney is a very good debater. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced. this is the biggest deal in the world to him. >> he's right, isn't he? because mr. romney obviously has a lot more time to devote to debate practice than the president does and i expect it could be edadvantageous for mr. romney. >> well, i guess the other thing is romney has debated how many primary debates? about 20? it was ludicrous. so he's had a lot of time -- >> to be fair, michael, he wasn't debating figures of einstein intelligence. >> that's right. and a couple other differences, a one-on-one debate is very different than that clown car of, you know, 12 people coming out on the stage and the other is that in those primary debates, you know, people were
and john kerry fought it out every day about the war. in 2008 we were at war, and barack obama and john mccain fought it out every day in that war. this week when the financial crisis was absolutely on fire, at that debate, they were talking about the wars. this year, president obama does bring it up, he does bring it up at most of his stump speeches, how he explains what he has done and planning on doing talking about the two wars. he doesn't have to say much more because he's speaking to an empty room. the romney campaign has no identifiable position on afghanistan. they have been unwilling and unable to hold up that side of debate and so regardless of what it means for the candidates as a country we are deprived of a national discussion about a war we are in. 70,000 american families having skin in the game right now. we have -- that's part of the reason i'm looking forward to the debates. some ways sort of a post-policy campaign. and you can't do that in a debate, at least unless the debate is really bad. >> this is -- this is billed as a domestic policy debate, but -- and there are so
they wanted to take votes away from john kerry. they got banned by wal-mart for partisan registration efforts. how right-wing do you have to be to get banned by wal-mart? the most important part of all of that is taking democratic demonstrations and ripping them up as they have in the past or as they were in this case in florida changing the addresses so when somebody goes to vote they say i'm sorry you can't vote, you don't live here. even a republican from utah during an investigation of this earlier, said, wow, we didn't do anything like this, he said quote . . . and that's chris cannon republican of utah. did he ever get prosecuted for any of this? no, because after they do the voter fraud, bush won. and the bush administration decided they won't pursue charges. really? how surprising. so mitt romney goes to the same bag of trips. and they have also paid $20,000. they said we use this vendor for signature-gathering services, but have not used them since 2011. i love that quote. because it makes it seem like we haven't used these guys all the way from . . . last year. a
that he has -- call it or late ability or what you want -- remember john kerry? "before i voted for the $87 million, i voted against it." that played into the negative narrative of john kerry as being a foot locker. -- flip-flopper. this tape played into the stereotype of mitt romney as an aloof, detached, uncaring, just unable to show empathy for people who are not in his social or economic bracket. >> from the politico piece," rare is the moment when romney sings the praises of the working stiff." mike huckabee told the jay leno romney reminds you of the guy who fired the of. >> -- fired you. >> look, romney is not going to be the clinton who feels your pain. he is not a great politician. but one of the reasons for this stereotype -- it did not come out of nowhere. it came out of tens of millions of dollars of ads by the obama campaign about how he handled people with bain capital and all that. the essence of this is the other series ads which say he wants to reduce taxes on the rich. romney has protested that this is not true, that he wants to reduce tax rates on the rich, am
to john kerry a few years ago. but romney's people should have been smart enough to know this was happening. there was no presumption of that. they didn't get out aahead of the story. they didn't define their candidate well. there's two parts to this election, chris. one, is romney said a lot of people are unhappy with obama and his leadership and the economy. we accept that. he never made the connection that i'm the answer and solution. that's where the disconnect happened. >> mitt romney has been doing a lot to -- we saw it starting at the conventions. make himself more acceptable and help people understand him better. he's doing these direct into the camera ads. let me play one of those for you. >> more americans are living in poverty than when president obama took office. my plan will create 12 million new jobs over the next four years. helping lift families out of poverty and strengthening the middle class. >> the president is doing the same thing, doing some of these direct to camera. when you see a million ads in a battleground states, do these stand out? how do yo

for the "daily beast "the adviser and consultant of course for john kerry. and larry sabato who runs the university of virginia center for pol techs. larry, let me start with you. you're kind of the man in the middle here. where do you think the race stands right now? >> bob, i think the president is ahead. at my crystal ball station we have him at 290 electoral votes but some of those states are just barely leaning to him, like my native virginia. obama is ahead two or three points. the polls have him up higher than that, but i don't think he's really there. >> schieffer: ar let me just go to our map of the battled ground states here, nevada, new hampshire, north carolina, ohio, virginia, florida, iowa, wisconsin and colorado. i think most of the polls suggest now that the president is at least slightly ahead in all of these states, except possibly north carolina. cbs news is now calling ohio in fact leaning, leaning to the president not a toss-up state. does that sound about right to you? >> that sounds about right. i actually think north carolina is probably leaning to romney, des

is the mock mitt romney, if you will, john kerry, senator john kerry of massachusetts, he also battle tested. he had his own experience in these debates in 2004. people forget he had a series of epic debates debating a republican governor of massachusetts who challenged him for his senate seat back in 1996. that was bill welles. so it's going to be intense, and as you mentioned, he leaves tomorrow, has one event on the ground when he leaves for nevada. then he goes to ground, training at altitude, because the debate is in the mile-high city of denver. but we don't expect to see much of him. he's going to be doing a lot of practicing for that debate wednesday night. >> this is president obama's first debate since 2008. governor romney had what seemed like 163 primary debates earlier this year. how confident are the president's advisers that he's not a tad rusty? >> reporter: you know, i think that that's something, a story line that they would like to promote. what we've seen, it's almost comica comical, to the extent we've seen both camps downplayings the expectations. so much of life is exp
john kerry was not the right guy to play mitt romney, anything like that? >> no, because, you know, i don't know how you can say that, because in a way, mitt romney and john kerry are very formal people, they are obviously well educated people with a kind of refinement about them, they aren't sloppy in any way, obnoxious in any way, they use firm language but both basically strong people, in the accomplishment, it was probably a very good pick but the romney that came in last night i would say you were right a couple of minutes ago, that romney was not predictable, he came in so strong and so in charge that he basically took over the room and i felt he was sufficient on that stage meaning the president didn't need to be on there for romney to put on the show or jim lehrer, it was romney control of that space and physical control of that space which was so dominant, i don't think we have seen anything like it before. >> rose:. >> in probably a presidential debate. >> rose: i also heard this was not a new romney in the context of have i seen him before. >> yes, mike barnicle saw him i
the debates, but george w. bush exceeded his expectations and did fine. four years later, john kerry at least in some of the eyes probably was a better debater but didn't necessarily matter. chuck is right, it is difficult to reset it. but there are a lot of voters who are completely fine with a new president, i think, even some people who voted for president obama. i was talking to a voter a week ago in wisconsin and said he voted for obama four years ago and not sure at all. he is open to voting for governor romney if he knew what he stood for. that is governor romney's charge here to put some meat on the bones of what he stands for on his policies. and people are open to that. >> jim, imagine yourself as a debate moderator this week and put on your mask and go with it. what kind of questions would you like to see these candidates address that will actually speak to the concerns you hear voters have about the future of this country? >> there is one question and i don't want to tell jim what to do but ask it different ways, and that is how in the world what you are proposing enough to get th

to come up with an analogy which is for me the de ja vu of this election is 2004. okay? when john kerry couldn't describe his position was on the war of iraq, would he he have voted for it knowing what he knew at that time? how would he get out of it? it's one thing to deliver a critique of a sitting president with big challenges. even if you think that the sitting president is responsible for all of those challenges, as democrats thought about president bushes, they are now thinking about it with president obama. it's easy. when you say, i'm going to make it better, vote for me. people not unreasonably, not laugh blee say, how are you going to do that? what are you going to do? john kerry struggled with that question. mitt romney is struggling with that now. >> that seems to be the problem. what is the message besides we don't like president obama. >> my problem with the campaign is they really need to start delineating between what the obama campaipresidency looks li romney's presidentially will look like. i agree with you, we're getting down to the 11th hour and there's one final deb
